Abstract

The construction industry continues to face persistent challenges related to low labor productivity, unreliable short-term planning, and high levels of material waste, particularly in architectural works such as wall installation. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Last Planner System (LPS), a lean construction approach, in improving productivity and reducing waste in lightweight concrete block installation at the Midtown Hotel Project, Samarinda. A case study methodology was employed using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were collected through field observations, document analysis of Weekly Work Plans, and performance measurements based on Percent Plan Complete (PPC), labor productivity (m²/person/day), and material waste percentage. The results indicate that LPS implementation significantly improved planning reliability, as reflected by an increase in average PPC from 56% to 78%. Labor productivity increased from 4.8 to 6.3 m²/person/day, while material waste decreased from 11% to 4.5%. These improvements were supported by enhanced coordination, more realistic planning, and the integration of technical innovations such as the use of a lightweight block adhesive applicator. The findings demonstrate that LPS contributes to more stable workflows, reduced non-value-adding activities, and improved resource efficiency. This study concludes that LPS is an effective management approach for enhancing construction performance and offers strong potential for broader application in building projects to support sustainable and efficient construction practices.
