MSMEs in Riau Province have a tough time staying competitive and sustainable, especially as they try to move away from relying on oil and gas and shift toward entrepreneurship and business diversity. This study digs into how social capital and communication networks help build a stronger local entrepreneurial ecosystem. Here’s how we did it: We talked to 11 entrepreneurs, watched how they interacted in WhatsApp groups for a year, and tracked what their organizations were up to. What stood out? Social capital, basically trust, shared norms, and relationships built through groups like PPUMI and IWAPI, lies at the heart of these business networks. When people have a lot in common, like age, business type, or membership, it boosts solidarity and trust. But differences, like the products they sell, languages they speak, or where they're from, actually spark collaboration and new ideas across sectors. WhatsApp groups have become the main way these entrepreneurs communicate, blending official business with casual chat. Leaders in these organizations aren’t just figureheads; they connect members to outside resources and help spread new ideas. The network itself is pretty centralized, with tight-knit groups, bridges between them, and some members who stand a bit apart, all of which shape how quickly and widely innovation spreads. So, what’s the bottom line? MSMEs in Riau move forward when they bring together three things: strong social capital, robust communication networks, and a steady flow of innovation. This study builds on ideas from Putnam and Rogers, showing how they play out locally. And on a practical level, it points out the need for digital skills, balanced communication, and the powerful role of social organizations in helping MSMEs grow.
